Tell me a little about how you started writing?
I discovered my passion for writing/story-telling when I was seven-years-old.
When I was in second grade I was assigned a book report. I was so excited because I thought that meant I had to write my own story. When my mom told me what a book report really was I got pretty upset. I didn’t want to write about someone else’s book, I wanted to write my own story. So I did and have continued to do so.
Do you write as a hobby or a career?
It’s a hobby that I’d like to make a career.
What do you do to take a break from writing?
I read, exercise and watch my favourite movies.
Tell me about your stories?
The Kamyla Chung Series I write deals with difficult issues children face every day. As a former public school teacher, I feel it’s essential to address sensitive topics in a gentle way that promotes meaningful conversations between parents/teachers and children.
Chris Kringle’s Cops The First Mission is a middle-grade fantasy novel full of fun and action. Here is my shameless plug:
One impossible mission.
Patty Pringle and Agent 12-25 have until midnight to complete their mission.
Senator Claudius will do anything to make sure that doesn’t happen.
A fun, fast-paced adventure that will fly with you above the rooftops.
I also have a new release coming out this February called Captain Hook: Villain or Victim. It tells Hook’s side of the story with Peter Pan.
Do you have a particular genre? Particular audience in mind?
The genres I write are fantasy and children’s picture books. My audience is children, teens and young adults (and kids at heart).
What’s the favourite story you have written (not necessarily your best!)
Chris Kringle’s Cops The First Mission
There are two reasons for this:
1-The story was inspired by my son. When he was little I used to tell him and his friends that I was a Secret Agent for Santa Claus. They were so amazed!
2-The main character is loosely based on my daughter. A very classy gal with a wonderful mind!
Where do your ideas come from?
They come from everywhere; sometimes in the most unexpected places: pictures, music, news stories, my life experiences, people I encounter.
In terms of writing, is there anything you know now which you wished you’d known at the start of your writing career?
Definitely, take a few courses on how to successfully market books and book cover design.
Who are your favourite authors/ favourite books?
I have many so I’ll just name a few: J.K. Rowling/The Harry Potter Series, Katherine Applegate/Wishtree, Crenshaw, Lloyd Alexander/The Prydain Series, Jan Brett, Eric Carle…
What advice would you give would be authors?
Read, write, repeat. Join a writer’s group and support other authors. Write the story you want to read and have fun! Writing should bring joy to your life.
